Raw Review: Sting Retiring? Y2J Turning Heel? Or will we just not address either?
By Justin Blakeman
Good evening wrestling fans! It's that time of the week again and we are once again here to recap what was another decent Monday Night Raw. Tonight's Raw had a lot of buzz surrounding it. The buzz was mostly centered around the Icon Sting and his big announcement. There was a lot of speculation that Sting would be coming out to retire due to an injury he suffered last night at Night of Champions. The injury occurred when Rollins power bombed Sting into the turn buckles. At this point no one really know the extent of the injury but we do know it was some kind of neck injury. Unfortunately we would not hear any updates on Sting's condition tonight on Raw so the speculation will likely continue as the weeks go on.
The show was rumored to be kicking off with a special announcement from Sting but as the show came on air, Bray Wyatt's music hit and he made his way to the ring. Wyatt cut a promo about how they dominated Reigns and Ambrose last night. Just as he was hitting his promo stride, Roman's music hit and he came down to the ring. Roman challenged Bray to a fight which Bray accepted. The two would brawl it out for a few minuets in a heated segment. Eventually the other members of the Wyatt family got involved and began to beat down Roman Reigns. Dean Ambrose and Randy Orton would come down to make the save and the three men stood tall in the ring after running the Wyatt Family out of the ring area. This was a not your average start for Raw! I can't remember the last time Raw kicked off with an all out brawl. I liked the change of pace and I like the focus on a different story for the start of Raw. I am not really thrilled about the addition of Rand Orton to the mix but it is what it is. I was honestly hopping we would hear something from Y2J concerning the shoulder block heel turn from last night. Sadly we never did hear from Y2J so hopefully at some point that story line will develop because the thought of Dean Ambrose vs Y2J is just amazing.
Following the Wyatt angle we were taking backstage to find Seth Rollins attempting to find the Authority. When he found their office, he walked in to find Corporate Kane standing there drinking coffee. Kane was all smiles and jokes as he spoke to Rollins. He told him he was not aware of any masked Kane return the night before and that he personally scheduled a rematch for Rollins later in the evening. The match would be against John Cena for the U.S Championship. Seth freaked out and left the office. As the two were talking you could see that the Kane mask in the box had disappeared. I actually really liked this segment and found the creepy Kane to very entertaining. I really like the bi-polar/split personality Kane. The happy Kane was actually kind of funny. The only problem I have with this angle is the fact that they did not put the classic Kane mask on Kane. I want to see Kane win the title with his original gimmick before he retires. This would have been the perfect time to make that happen.
The first official match of the night was a 6 man tag team match between Neville, Lucha Dragons and The Cosmic Wasteland. The match was a decent match with a botch from none other than Sin Cara to kick things off. They guys worked hard and Sin Cara made up for the batch with some good moves later in the match. Neville and the boys would end up winning which in my opinion was kind of lame. I really want WWE to pick a group and build them for an extended period of time. I am tire of the trading wins crap. They give all the momentum to one team and then they take it all away one night later. The Wyatt Family is a prime example of what I am talking about.
Ryback and Bo Dallas had a match which ended up being an extended squash match. Dallas had a lot more offense than he normally gets in his matches. Owens set on commentary for the match and he would eventually attack Ryback after the match. Not much to add about this segment, I like the Owens vs Ryback angle for at least one more match. It doesn't matter who they put Owens with he always brings his A game and puts on a show.
After the Ryback vs Dallas match we were treated to what would be the segment of the night in my opinion. Charlotte, Team PCB and Ric Flair came down to the ring and began to celebrate last night's win. After a few heart felt exchanges between the father and daughter, Paige took the mic from Charlotte and began to rip the entire Diva's division. She bashed Charlotte for getting to the top because of her connection to Ric. She bashed Nikki for sleeping her way to the top. She bashed Nattie for not being on Raw and she finished by storming off for a confrontation with Nattie in the back. Charlotte beat Brie Bella in what was a decent match. Natalya would go on to have a match later in the show, the match was short and pretty uneventful but it was nice to see Natalya back on Raw. I was not happy with the loss but I think the loss was done for a reason. I can see Natalya losing a few more matches which will force her to create her own team.
Sheamus and Mark Henry happened and Sheamus won.
New Day and Rusev took on the Dudley's and Ziggler in a six man tag match. This match was a decent match which saw New Day pulling out all their normal comedic spots. Xavier Woods was golden on the trombone as always. He played Rusev's theme and let Summer play with his..... slide if you know what I mean. The whole segment was a lot of fun. New Day and Rusev would get the win off of an Xavier Woods distraction. New Day continues to be the best part of Raw week in and week out. I was surprised to see them actually getting booed by the crowd for one. They worked really well with Rusev and I wouldn't mind seeing this combo again.
Big Show KO punched Cesaro for yet another win. I for the life of me do not understand why WWE is feeding Cesaro to Big Show. I totally understand that Show needs big wins so he can be take seriously in his match with Brock. What I don't understand is why they need to feed Cesaro to him. They have a roster full of guys who could do the deed and yet they choose to squash him???? Cesaro was putting on solid matches with some big name guys just a few weeks ago. So what happened?
The show would conclude with a nice match between John Cena and Seth Rollins. The two would have a match that was better than their Night of Champions match. The match had a lot of back and forth action which saw both men get a lot of offense. John Cena would eventually get the upper hand which lead to him getting the clean victory. After the match Kane appeared on screen and cut a promo on Rollins. After the promo the lights turned red and the big red machine's music hit and he burst through the ring. Kane was able to grab Seth Rollins and pull him down into the "pits of hell."
This segment has been done many times before but I really enjoyed it. Hopefully WWE will do the right thing and keep Seth Rollins off TV till Monday. I swear I will be so mad if Rollins is back on Smackdown like nothing happened.
All and all it was a pretty good Raw! There was a lot of action with some good story line development. I am looking forward to seeing where WWE goes with the Seth Rollins vs Kane angle. I am also interested to see where the Paige rant goes from here. WWE didn't really push Hell in a Cell but this show didn't feel like the boring filler shows we normally get after pay-per-views. I was a little disappointed by the lack of updates on Sting and I didn't like how they never addressed the Y2J angle.
I hope you all enjoyed Raw tonight and I hope you followed along with our live twitter review! If you didn't and would like to head on over to Twitter and look for @JWN35. Goodnight and thanks for reading Wrestling Fans!!
