Three Part Series: Wrestling is it Real, Fake or Something else?
Part 1: Is Wrestling
Real?

Over the weekend the
Internet was going absolutely crazy over the UFC! Your first thought would be
to chalk the hype up to the huge fight featuring Ronda Rousey, which took place
Saturday evening. That however was not what had the Internet buzzing, it was a
sly comment made by the owner of UFC Dana White. In a conversation which was
started by WWE World Heavy Weight Champion Seth Rollins; Dana White dropped the F-WORD. Now I’m
not talking about the F-WORD that rhymes with truck. I am talking the F-WORD
that is never uttered in wrestling circles. I’m talking about the word “Fake”. That’s right Dana White called wrestling “Fake” and wrestling fans and
wrestlers alike were not to happy about it! This whole situation has me asking
the question, “Why do people love to bash wrestling for being fake?” For that
matter why do people look down on wrestling fans and wrestling in general? I have decided I will write a three part article
series that addresses whether or not wrestling is real, fake or just something else.
For starters I will
address the question is wrestling real? To me this is a very easy question to
answer. I one hundred percent believe wrestling is real, now I can already hear
the non-wrestling fans snickering to themselves but I do genuinely believe that
parts of wrestling are real. You can laugh all you want but that doesn’t change
the fact that wrestlers take REAL
risks night in and night out. They risk their lives and health every time they
go out to the ring. There are countless examples I could give you to prove
this point but I will only give you two in this article. The first example is a
match I remember watching as a kid; it was June 28, 1998 and the match was Undertaker
vs Mankind in a Hell in the Cell match. What ensued was nothing short of the
most insane match I have ever watched. With in minuets of the opening bell
Mankind was launched from the top of the 30 foot steel cage and he fell not on
a pad or a cleared off breakaway table. He fell onto an announcer’s table,
which was covered in TV monitors and microphones. The fall dislocated Mankind’s
shoulder. Most people would have stop after dislocating a shoulder but Mankind got
back up and climbed to the top of the cage only to be slammed to the floor
again. This time he fell through the cage (which was planned). When he hit the
floor he was knocked unconscious which was obviously not planned. After being revived he finished the match,
which lasted an amazing 17 minuets from start to finish. A
post match photo of Mankind revealed that he had what looked like a booger
hanging from his nose but this was no booger it was his own tooth.
As crazy as that
example was I have another one for you and this one took place last week on Monday
Night Raw. In the main event, which was a Championship match between John Cena
and Seth Rollins; John Cena suffered a broken nose thanks to an ill-timed knee
to the face from Seth Rollins. Rollins was going for planned knee to the face
when he accidentally really hit John in the face. The effects were immediately
visible as John’s nose slummed to one side and blood began to pour down his
face. John was taken to a hospital for surgery and will be out of action for
the next few weeks as he recovers. These are just two of the many examples I
could give you to prove that wrestling is dangerous and the risks that the
wrestlers take are REAL! The matches may be predetermined but the risks and the
moves are still real.

I am sure there is a
lot more I could say about this but I will let this be it for now. I will be
back again later this week with part two in the series. Part two will be all
about the “fake” side of wrestling. I have had a lot of different interactions
with non-wrestling fans over this one so I can’t wait to share my opinion in
part two! I hope you have enjoyed Part one and keep an eye out for Part Two: Is
Wrestling Fake?
